The aurora borealis begins with energy from the sun. Charged particles hurled through space in a solar wind that collides with Earth’s magnetic field.
These particles are drawn towards the poles, interacting with gases high in our atmosphere, exciting oxygen and nitrogen atoms. As they return to their normal state, they release photons. Tiny bursts of light.
Each photon is a flicker in the sky and together, they dance to form the luminous, shifting veil we know as the aurora. It’s here, at the liminal edge between Earth and space, that reminds us: our planet is an island in a vast sea of stars, and there isn’t anything more otherworldly than the aurora to remind us of this.
