  • Five craters - Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

Five craters – Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

    Price range: £65.00 through £375.00

The volatile beauty of a crater chain in action was something to behold, the heat coming off it making the helicopter warm, was incredible. Initially consisting of six craters, the chain had reduced to five as volcanic activity concentrated on the most powerful cones—a common pattern in fissure eruptions. The image highlights the raw, shifting power of the earth, with bright, molten lava erupting from the craters, framed by the freshly cooled new lava on the landscape and rising plumes of smoke. It’s wild to think that since capturing this shot, another eruption has occurred, burying the majority of cones, leaving only the top cone active. I had hoped to visit them one day, but nature had other plans!

  • Lava explosion - Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

Lava explosion – Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

    Price range: £65.00 through £375.00

This image distills the raw energy of the volcanic crater chain. The alignment of the craters mapping the fault line along the earth’s crust, each pulsating with fiery intensity, is beautifully highlighted by the sunlight diffused through volcanic gases. The escaping gases create a surreal, smoky atmosphere, while some shoot out in explosive bursts as they race through the magma beneath the surface, adding to the drama, with lava exploding from the cone. This interplay of light and shadow, along with the vibrant, molten rock, paints a vivid picture of nature’s power. Witnessing this scene was a stark reminder of the dynamic forces shaping our planet, an awe-inspiring display of the earth’s fiery temperament.

  • Lava River - Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

Lava River – Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

    Price range: £65.00 through £375.00

As our pilot followed the lava river south across the lava field, I was struck by the slow yet relentless movement of the molten rock. Some sections had cooled to form a rocky crust, while the underlying lava continued its fiery journey. The heat radiating from the flow was phenomenal, causing beads of sweat to form on my brow, providing a full sensory experience of the eruption! It is amazing to think our planet’s core holds this kind of inferno and we’re all existing atop the chaos!

  • New earth flow - Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

New earth flow – Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

    Price range: £65.00 through £375.00

It’s hard to portray the scale the incredible patterns formed by lava as it spreads across a vast area, without any reference point to compare this to. The molten rock, glowing with an intense orange hue, weaves intricate designs on the darkened landscape, creating a mesmerising tapestry of fiery veins. Each curve and line tells a story of the earth’s dynamic processes, as new land is forged in the wake of the lava’s relentless advance. Witnessing this flow up close, I was captivated by the raw beauty and power of nature, a reminder of the continuous cycle of destruction and creation that shapes our world.

  • South west crater chain - Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

South west crater chain – Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

    Price range: £65.00 through £375.00

This perspective from the north of the volcanic activity, clearly showing how the lava flow has favoured the south-west direction. This direction of travel, however, is subject to rapid changes during an eruption, as the molten rock perpetually seeks the path of least resistance. The image captures the fluid dynamics of the lava, highlighting the volatile and unpredictable nature of volcanic landscapes. Observing this ever-shifting scene was a profound reminder of the earth’s raw power and the transient beauty born from such destructive forces.

  • The crater chain - Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

The crater chain – Sundhnúkagígar Volcano Iceland

    Price range: £65.00 through £375.00

As we descended closer to the biggest of the craters, the intricate dynamics of the eruption became more apparent. The lava had begun to solidify on the surface, forming a fragile crust that was periodically broken as the levels rose and moved around within the craters. These fragments were then carried down the lava flow, creating a dramatic scene of molten rock and escaping gases. The intense heat and vibrant colours of the lava contrasted sharply with the dark, solidified fresh lava surface, highlighting the relentless power and beauty of volcanic activity.
