A moment of unexpected closeness and exhilarating contact. A gannet, having dived into the water with breathtaking precision, opened its wings to manoeuvre underwater and in doing so, clattering against me and my camera. The kerfuffle of this contact punctuated the immersive experience of being in such close proximity to these magnificent divers. Far from the fearsome strike of their beaks, which I knew gannets would be too precise to ever pose a threat, it was the brush of their wings that brought a thrilling sense of connection to these creatures. Each touch was a vivid reminder of the gannet’s mastery over both air and sea, leaving a palpable sense of awe in the wake of their powerful, yet controlled presence.
