Kindling futures

a world of islands, intricately connected

Kindling Futures is a curated collection of fine art nature prints , as part of the ISLANDNESS exhibition at National Trust’s Scotney Castle.

We live on islands in a blue planet suspended in space — but nothing we do happens in isolation.

From the choices we make on the shoreline to the smoke that cloaks our skies, every action ripples outward.

On the hottest days on record, people flock to the coast and countryside in search of solace.

They bathe in beauty, then leave behind disaster. Disposable barbecues still alight.

Kindling Futures invites us to read the signs

These are not isolated incidents,
They are symptoms of

A much larger disconnection

Wildfires burn on the other side of the globe and the smoke circulates around the globe. skies.

In 2020, smoke from Californian wildfires reached us the UK giving a vivid sunset. A friend in California messaged me, sending a map to show how the smoke had travelled across the ocean.

In August 2024, the sun dimmed under a veil of Canadian wildfire haze. The air turned cold. Birdsong stopped.

Perceived beauty, a stark warning.

Sunlight bowed out half an hour early, setting above the horizon.

Nature sending a clear message, humans rejoiced at the ‘amazing sunset’. The disconnect from nature meaning her message was missed by many.

Noctilucent clouds, once rare, are now rising in frequency. These shimmering high-altitude formations are shaped by changes in our upper atmosphere — another whisper of disruption at the wild edge of twilight.

This is a perfect storm. A planet trying to tell us something. Kindling Futures invites us to read the signs.

To remember that every island is connected. That every breath, every action, every fragment we leave behind affects the whole.

And that when we truly listen — we hear it clearly. Nature is screaming.
