Description
These rare, high-altitude clouds form in the mesosphere, 80km above Earth’s surface, and are becoming more frequent due to increasing greenhouse gases and water vapour in the upper atmosphere. Ice crystals condense around particles — often pollution — acting as a nucleus. Once seen as a rare phenomenon of polar latitudes, their growing presence is a shimmering warning in summer twilight skies.
