A love letter to the ocean and its remarkable inhabitants

The ocean is more than a place – it’s a sanctuary, a muse, and a reminder of our deep connection to the planet. Souls of the Sea is my latest collection of ocean photography prints, inspired by my love of marine life and dedication to ocean conservation.

Capturing the raw beauty and powerful stories of whales, dolphins, and seals, photographed from beneath the waves, from the surface, and from the sky.

This collection is a reflection of my life’s work. As a trustee and treasurer at Whale Wise, I support groundbreaking research that illuminates the lives of marine mammals and their vital role in the ocean’s ecosystem.

As a volunteer Marine Mammal Medic with BDMLR, I’ve witnessed firsthand the resilience of these creatures – rescuing entangled whales and helping stranded seals.

Why marine mammals matter: their role in a healthy planet

Marine mammals are much loved. They have the ability to capture and captivate our imagination and they’re essential to the health of our oceans and planet. Whales, for example, act as ‘ecosystem engineers.’ Their movements stir up nutrients in the water, boosting the growth of phytoplankton, which absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. In fact, the ocean’s phytoplankton are responsible for generating over 50% of the oxygen we breathe.

Seals and dolphins also play crucial roles in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. They regulate fish populations, which helps keep the entire food web in check. Healthy oceans are a cornerstone in the fight against climate change, and marine mammals are at the heart of these systems, contributing to a planet that sustains life in all its forms.

By protecting marine mammals, we’re not just safeguarding incredible creatures – we’re taking an essential step in preserving the delicate balance that keeps our climate stable and our oceans thriving.
