Oh, the UV jellyfish. So I knew that jellyfish or some jellyfish glow when they’re under UV light. And I’d always wanted to experiment and see if it was possible to capture them in the water but that’s actually a bigger challenge than I realised it was going to be trying to find jellyfish at night, is really hard. I don’t know where they go, and I should probably research this, or I should research at some point.
As I’m saying this out loud. It’s sort of like yeah, where do they go? Why don’t I know where they go? Because I should. I, I found it hard to find them at night. My theory in my head up to now was that maybe they sink more because there’s not then the risk of predators near the surface and so it made it quite difficult to find jellyfish to take pictures of in this way.
In addition to that, when you’re shooting at night, I if I was shooting like a star sky or the Aurora, I would have my tripod out. It would be a long exposure where the shutter is open for several seconds to let lots of light in. And so I didn’t know how I was going to manage capturing jellyfish under UV light and how that would actually work in terms of the light difference, because it’s always a lot darker under the surface compared to the sky.
However, it was actually the exact right moment to be trying to shoot this because I didn’t need a shutter speed that would take me down lower, than what would be suitable handheld and also the fact that, the the jellyfish was in a shallow and it was quite a still evening and so I managed to capture this image with the UV light glaring on the jellyfish, this split shot, and then that lovely, lovely crescent moon in the background. And I just love the fact that there’s kind of two different types of moon in this image moon jelly and of course our lunar moon as well.
