Gannets have a third eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, that acts like built-in goggles, allowing them to see clearly underwater as they hunt. In this image, a group of gannets fan out just below the surface, scanning the blue for signs of movement. With eyes adapted to shift focus between air and sea, they can lock onto their prey even in the chaos of bubbles and turbulence. Every tilt of the head and flick of the foot is part of their precision choreography in the hunt for fish.
